We had a fantastic day Wednesday at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty! One highlight of Ellis Island was looking for our ancestors' names on the immigration wall and the Ellis Island computer registry. We also saw the Registry Room and Kissing Post that we recognized from our virtual tour, and were able to truly envision what life was like for an immigrant arriving in America.
On the ferry ride from Ellis Island to the Statue of Liberty, the majority of our LIS fifth graders took in the sights of the NYC skyline from the top deck. Although it was drizzling and a little cloudy out, we had a clear view of the Freedom Tower and the Statue of Liberty in the distance! Lady Liberty only became more breathtaking as we got closer, and we were thrilled to climb the 215 stairs to her pedestal. There was the option of taking an elevator, but where would the fun be in that?

Thank you to all the chaperones who made our day run smoothly, parents who woke up extra early to pack lunches and get their fifth graders to school, and the excited students that made the trip well worth all of the planning : )
